Often, all it takes is a couple of professional hypnosis sessions followed by regular use of a good self-hypnosis CD for you to become smoke free for life. You can permanently change your behavior and regain your health by combining self-help and outside assistance.

With over a dozen techniques to choose from, there is no reason to choose just one NLP or hypnotherapy school. You can utilize these techniques to arrive at your ultimate goal of stopping smoking forever.

One very popular technique is hypnosis. It’s been used since the 19th century as a therapeutic technique. Despite being connected with charlatans in the old days, it is considered by modern experts to have a role in helping to alter many behaviors. Clearly, the physical addiction is only a part of the whole smoking habit. The mind must be changed for effective long term change.

Hypnosis operates by inserting suggestions into your subconscious. The hidden triggers which arouse the desire to smoke can be fought by putting in other triggers which counter them.

It can be just as helpful to work on your conscious mind. MLP for instance, concentrates on finding and figuring out the thoughts and ideas, which are in our control. When they are looked at carefully, they can be effected by referring to the truth and logic.

Okay, you’ve decided to quit smoking. You’ve gathered all your information and you’ve developed a plan. But you’re still worried because you’re unsure of what to expect after you quit smoking. To help your plan to quit succeed take a moment to look at the most common symptoms of smoking withdrawal.

One common symptom of smoking withdrawal is that you may experience some dizziness during the first one or two days. If this happens to you just take a quick break. The dizziness will pass.

Another common symptom that some people experience with smoking withdrawal is headaches. These can appear at any time during the first couple of weeks. If you do experience headaches after you quit smoking, the best thing to do is to try and relax. Most people just take their usual headache remedy. You can also use other common headache relief methods like a cold cloth on the back of your neck. If you think your headache is due to stress take a short walk. In fact, after you quit smoking walking should be part of your plan. Not only is it a great stress relief tool, it also improves your breathing.

A Health Care Plan Everyone Should Agree On

I was watching one of my favorite Sunday morning broadcasts, CBS’ “Face the Nation” when I heard Bob Schieffer ask John Boehner, the House Republican leader,  if he still smoked cigarettes. The House Republican leader replied that he still smoked. Bob went on to point out that he is both an ex-smoker and cancer survivor. He knows first hand the effects of cigarette smoking on one’s health.

Bob then went on to comment that President Obama is also a smoker.  I researched this comment and found that he is a smoker, but he only smokes in private. I guess that’s good. At least he’s not exposing his family and friends to second hand smoke.

This bothers me. We have two of the leaders of our country, a Democrat and a Republican that both smoke cigarettes. What is puzzling to me is that while both of these gentlemen are tasked by their constituents to make decisions on spending our health care dollars, both of them show a complete lack of interest in health.

According to aboutus.com “smoking-related deaths costs the nation about $92 billion a year in the form of lost productivity.”

If you want to quit smoking there are many different types of therapies to help you. Cold turkey is one way, which of course means to quit smoking with no therapy all at once. While this does work for some people and is very beneficial to your physical health, most people find this a very difficult method to quit smoking.

Since I use hypnotherapy to help people quit smoking I have interviewed hundreds of people who have used nicotine replacement therapy (NRT). NRT can be a very helpful way to help a person quit smoking because addresses the physical addiction. Using nicotine replacement therapy a person can gradually wean themselves off of nicotine.

Since nicotine is a drug that induces a dependency, when a person tries to quit smoking, they often suffer physical withdrawal symptoms that can make life unpleasant until they pass. These symptoms include the “smoker’s flu” which mimics a cold or flu accompanied by irritableness, grumpiness and fatigue. By the way, these are the most common symptoms you might experience after you quit smoking. A few other common withdrawal symptoms are headaches, coughs and sore throats. NRT allows the smoker to use gums, patches, sprays, inhalers, or lozenges with nicotine in them so they can break the smoking habit without experiencing severe withdrawal symptoms. This is accomplished by lowering the dose of nicotine over a period of time until the body no longer craves it.

Cigarette Smoking and Your Lungs

Did you know that the association between heavy, long-term smoking and lung problems has been recognized for over 150 years? It has, as early as the 1860’s, physicians were warning patients about the relationship between cigarette addiction and breathing problems. Today, cigarette smoking is recognized as the number one cause of preventable deaths in the world and research continues to make that link clearer and more well-founded.

There is more to cigarette smoke than just the addiction to nicotine. In fact there are over 4,000 chemicals in cigarette smoke that are effect your lungs and are addictive and potentially harmful. Not all are present in significant amounts, to be sure, but nicotine and other known-carcinogens (cancer-causing compounds) are. Several of them, under the heat of combustion of the tobacco leaves, bind together to form tar, a known lung-injuring compound.

One of the effects of cigarette smoking is, because of its sticky nature, tar clings to cilia, the short, hair-like structures that line your airways (the bronchi and bronchioles). There, they hinder the natural action of your cilia. Here’s the effect it has on your lungs…

Around the world health experts agree that the best thing a cigarette smoker can do is to stop. Since I regularly use hypnosis as a way to help people quit smoking, I get asked all the time if I ever smoked. The answer is yes. When I was around thirteen, I began smoking. It was at under my house with my best friend. Later at my friend’s house we smoked with his older sister. One evening when we asked her for a cigarette she gave us one. I guess she though it was cute – her little brother and his friend trying to act so grown-up and cool with her – and over the course of the evening, she let us both smoke several cigarettes.

I didn’t really like smoking but one of the reason I had so many cigarettes is that I had the idea that smoking made me look cool. When I’d get a cigarette, I’d take a big drag or two, cough like crazy for several minutes and then I’d pass it to my friend. He’d do the same thing – inhale once or twice and practically hack up a lung as he waited to be able to breathe again. By the time we had two or three big drags each, the cigarette was gone. But by the end of the evening we were puffing away just like regular smokers. We thought we were the coolest. Of course, at the time I didn’t give any thought about how hard it could be to stop smoking cigarettes when I got older.

I smoked cigarettes all through high school and while I was in the Navy, along with other things. It was the 60’s and 70’s after all. It just seemed to make every event better, make me mellower and feel cooler. I used to love to go down to the pool hall, put some quarters in the jukebox, and shoot with a cigarette hanging from the side of my mouth. After all everyone smoked. No one even thought about it. In the Navy it was another reason to take a break. It was something to fiddle with in your hands when you were feeling socially awkward and an excuse to go outside and take a smoke break with your buddies or just stretch your legs. And it made it so much easier to make new friends and acquaintances. (more…)

Using Hypnosis to Quit Smoking

There are many ways that you can quit smoking, but some just won’t work – for you. That does not mean they are not effective, it just means that they were not effective – for you. Most people try three to five times and just as many ways before they successfully quit smoking. Some people take even more tries. Some find they can stop smoking on the first attempt, but that is not usually the case. If you have tried different methods to quit smoking that have failed in the past, since many people have used hypnotherapy to stop smoking, you may want to consider this method. Hypnosis can help you quit smoking also – if you want it to.

The power of suggestion may be part of why some can use hypnosis for smoking cessation. They believe it is going to work so it does. Also, studies have shown that there is really something to this type of method to quit smoking. Your subconscious mind is very powerful. It is where all your habits and addictions are stored. While some people have subconscious brains that resist addictions, others are not so inclined. For example, there is evidence that shows that alcoholism might not run in a family but rather addiction does. That is important to keep in mind. (more…)

We all know that cigarette smoking is bad for our health. In fact, by now, nearly everyone on the planet is aware of the dangers of cigarette smoking. Even knowing the dangers, there are over 3000 kids that start smoking every day!

Now like I said, nearly all of us are aware of the hazards of smoking. When I started smoking, packs of cigarettes had just began to have the warning “Caution: Cigarette Smoking May be Hazardous to Your Health” printed on their side. This was the first government effort to inform people that smoking was bad for you. Since then, fighting the battle against cigarettes has been a case of the tobacco industry versus common sense.

Unfortunately common sense does not prevail and our government continues to rather ineffectually attempt to legislate our behavior. At the same time the tobacco industry continues to spend hundreds of millions of dollars fighting the legislation and promoting their products of death.

Legislation passed on April 1, 2009 nearly doubled the price of tobacco. I believe that the rationale was that, by making tobacco products so expensive, especially in the economy we are now experiencing, this would be great method to help smokers quit smoking, simply because of the cost. (more…)
