Today there are more overweight adults and children than ever. The problem with this is that being overweight and obese increases the risk of many diseases and health conditions, including Type 2 diabetes and coronary heart disease. At a time when obesity affects both adults and children, there are many ways to prevent this outcome by creating some easy to follow habits for building healthy hearts in your child.

Here are five suggestions:

1. Be a good role model. This is one of the greatest family health secrets teaching your children what they need to do. If you, as parents, practice a daily ritual of healthy eating habits and regular exercise, your children will follow your lead.  Being a good role model for your children to follow is essential.

2.  Staying healthy means involving your family in activities that involve physical activity. This is because healthy hearts need exercise. This could be engaging in a daily routine of walking, or spending thirty minutes a day playing in the back yard, or teaching your children to swim. Whatever you decide to do remember that physical activity is a beneficial and preventative measure that will serve to maintain not only your good health, but that of your children.

3.  Limit T.V. and video games. This is another one of the greatest health secrets for children. Your children need to develop healthy habits not spend all day in front of a video screen. With video games and computers becoming the source of many hours spent idle, it’s a good idea to limit the amount of time spent on these activities. Have board games or other activities for them to engage in with you or their siblings. Moreover, this will also prevent your children eating the snacks associated with these activities.

4.  Be an encourager. Children who do have a problem with their weight need encouragement.  Developing a positive self-image increases your child’s self-esteem. This can lead to their discovery that healthy habits like physical exercise and proper nutrition is the path they want to choose.

5.  Limit the snacks you keep around the house. Staying healthy involves having healthy eating habits. While we all love snacks, having too many around the home encourages children to choose these unhealthy foods instead of grabbing an apple or other nutritious snacks.  There are plenty of snack recipes online that are healthy and nutritious. Have your children help with the preparation will give them greater incentive to consume the snack since they played a role in preparing it.

Obesity has become a pandemic in our society. It is causing illnesses and diseases such as diabetes and cancer in people of all ages. Healthy hearts don’t come about by accident. They come about by having healthy habits. You can make a difference for your child.
As a parent, your role is to give your children as healthy a head start as possible. This includes safeguarding their physical, mental, and emotional well-being.

The greatest health secrets are not secrets at all. What they really are is a mindset. Give you children the gift of healthy hearts. To keep them healthy make sure they have healthy eating habits and get plenty of exercise. Teaching heart healthy habits is a preventative measure that can help ensure the health of your entire family for a long time to come.
